My go to laptop is a MBPr which I use 75% of the time, but my business uses custom software that is exclusive to Win so I have always had another machine that is dedicated to windows. I realize that I could load parallels or run boot camp, but my personal preference is to dedicated machines. That being said I have been looking for a Windows laptop that comes close to a MBPr and the Dell is pretty darn close. I will spare the spec comparisons as they are fairly even. I will also not compare OSs as I am not a fan of Win 8 at all (although I am getting used to it).
Overall the XPS is a fine machine. The screen is gorgeous and as good if not better than the MBPr.The system is very fast and responsive. Keyboard is comfortable with good backbit keys. Build quality is very good and feels solid. Overall a beautiful machine.
My only complaints are that the fan noise is significantly louder than than the silent MBP and that the adaptive brightness controls do not work well and you need to turn them off. My biggest complaint is that the track-pad is not great. In many ways the best thing about macbooks are their superb track-pads. The XPS track-pad is quite good for a Win machine but still does not touch the MBP. The other thing to note is that at BEST you get about 3 hours on battery.
The best advice I can give is do NOT buy the non SSD version of this machine. I bought the 1TB / 32GB mSATA hybrid drive unit first and had to return it. The HD drive on that unit made a loud and irritating clicking sound and the fan noise was excessive.
working fine after initial setting up. Only issue so far is lack of wired network port that I missed on spec list. Was able to solve with usb3 to rj41 dongle. Why is that an issue, network storage is not on wifi network. The other thing that has been a pain is lack of dvd drive which I was aware of. Because of slower internet connection and havingsome special software on disk, set up has been slower than planned. This unit is part of experiment to see if it can replace a desktop as main photographic workstation when hooked to 3014 monitor. No hard conclusions yet but I initial work is promising.
Update, after a couple of months of untangling network links, permissions etc, I think I can safely offer an opinion regarding the use of this laptop as a replacement for a desktop as graphic workstation. It has plenty of horsepower to work with large operations on images in PS or LR and the 3014 plus a remote access to addition 24in monitor. It will save you some desk space, right before it takes it back with external dvd drive and hub for wired network and a usb3 hub. Once you have everything wired and connected it is unlikely to be used on road. In the end if I had do overs I would get a workstation level laptop which had the dvd drive and missing or extra ports. I was captured by the pound weight savings and missed up underestimated the impact of what made it thin. Overall still 4+ stars

I bought this specifically for editing raw camera images in Lightroom and Photoshop while traveling. I have no issues, just a headache with scaling in Photoshop CS6.I also wouldn't mind it being slightly smaller but the XPS 13 doesn't have the horsepower for me.
This laptop looks and feels awesome. The keyboard feels pretty good and the silicon around it is nice and soft.Wish the wrist rest area was slightly smaller. Keyboard is a little too far back. Problems with certain software being able to scale to the large screen resolution. Some installation windows for apps you can't read. You can't resize the window to read the text that is blown up due to improper scaling. Photoshop CS6 does not scale properly and everything is extremely small.Adobe refuses to fix this and make you buy the new Creative Cloud subscription to fix. Adobe's problem though, not the machine.
Adobe Lightroom 5 works perfectly.
No heating issues or loud fan noises. I use on desk or fanless lapdesk.
Loving Windows 8.1 with this touchscreen. Everyone I show it off to is amazed by this machine.
I keep in Lowepro camera backpack with laptop pocket. No problems on plane carrying this with a Canon DLSR and two telephoto L lenses along with wide and 600 flash. I was worried about size but it's great.

Good laptop with great specs.Had the motherboard go bad and laptop would no longer charge in less than 6 months.Hopefully it wont happen again outside of warranty because motherboards are a pain to replace on a laptop and can be expensive when buying from Dell. Dealing with Dell support and getting this fixed was a bit of a pain and took longer than expected. No 10 key keypad.I feel that the keyboard is just off center now because that is what we are used to. For the right price, this would be an excellent, powerful, light weight laptop!
I am quite pleased with my purchase, particularly since the refurbished model was sold at such a low price relative to the one currently on offer from Dell, which only differs by having a slightly higher screen resolution.
However, within a couple of days of receiving it, the computer went black.Dell was very helpful in troubleshooting and diagnosing and agreed to replace the motherboard.Their technician came within two days.It's working perfectly now.I should note that I also wrote to the retailer when the machine died, and they assured me that they would stand by their product in the event that Dell's intervention was not successful.
As for this Dell model, I'm very pleased, though I'm surprised that the fan sometimes kicks in and seems to do so even when there's no heavy duty work being done.

The motherboard, optical drive, and battery were replaced. I was told I need to buy a new power supply, but given no instructions on how to do that.
